Title: Light in Her Eyes
Author: Lexie
Feedback: Always welcome.
Character: Sailor Pluto, Queen Selenity & Princess Serenity
Prompt:
31_days - Day 15: People prefer to believe prettier, neatly wrapped lies.
Word Count: 466
Rating: PG
Genre: Dark, Gen
Summary: She watches with the care of someone observing a deadly, unpredictable animal, waiting for the beast to show its claws.
Notes: I do so love Dark!Silver Millennium fics. I haven't been writing much lately, and this was a little exercise to get me back into practice. I now kind of want to write an AU in this specific verse XD
Disclaimer: The characters of Sailor Moon belong to Toei, Bandai and Naoko Takeuchi. I make no profit from this fan-based venture.
She watches her Queen with the dedication of one who has been indoctrinated, of a devoted hand-maiden of the Silver Queen’s whim.
She watches with the care of someone observing a deadly, unpredictable animal, waiting for the beast to show its claws.
Everybody else sees the beauty, the love of Selenity, swathed in silks of white and silver, in robes of perfect pearls and a crown of diamonds. They see purity and hope in the Queen of the White Moon.
She does not. She sees the woman adamant on grasping every string of power within her sight, of hours upon hours spent pouring over maps and secret documents, of her never-ending demands of other planets, sugar-coated to seem like the most glorious of favours.
Despite any titles she holds, she is not here by any sort of choice. She is commanded to be present, to report to Selenity anything ‘of interest’ that she might glimpse at the Gates and to listen to Selenity’s ranting without saying a word.
How many times has Selenity spat at her angry words, threatening words, because the fabric of time and fate will not bend to Selenity’s whim? How many times has one of Selenity’s exquisite trinkets – a glass bowl heaped with flowers, a hand-painted tea cup, a silver hand mirror – collided with her face and she has not utter a sound in pain or anger?
She does not defy the Queen, for there is something beyond her great desire for beauty and power. She sees the stoop of Selenity’s shoulders, the translucency of her skin and the fineness of her hair. The emptiness of her gaze. How little she sleeps, how little she eats and how she clutches at the crystal. There is so little of her left, nothing more than a glance of her former self.
The Queen will die soon.
Of course, ‘soon’ is relative to a person who can see the length and breadth of Time itself. But one day, there shall be a child Queen ascending the throne, bewildered and grief-stricken, with her only lingering memories of her beautiful, loving Mama – nothing more than that of a heroine from a long-forgotten story book. The sweetest child ever gifted to the world, one with the greatest of destinies, Setsuna will protect the child. She will shield her from the ugliness her Mama cultivated like a parasite – the love of power, the love of lifeless marble and the desire to swallow the Crystal whole.
No, she will give Serenity was she needs – kindness, love and stories of a sweet and gentle Mama whose greatest joy was her daughter. Because more important than her own bitterness and distaste for the Queen, more important than all the power in the world, is making sure that Princess Serenity has the light of hope in her eyes.
